Its based on the triology by Philip Pullman called The Golden Compass, and in the last book *the movie coming out is a watered down version of the first book* two children seek out a way to kill God so they can do whatever they want.
(Also, Pullman said that was what he was trying to do in the book.) This obviously means there will be a second, and third movie made based on each book and the third we need to fight against.
If you think they have a right to make this, you're right, but its offensive, and we as Christians, Catholics, and even Muslims have the right to fight against it.
So don't waist your time posting annoying answers and opinions about us being whiney, and not respecting their right to a religious opinion.
Yes you have a right to YOUR opinion, but this question is being asked more towards parents, and Christians who find this offensive and who would like to see it taken off.
Is there anything we can do to get it banned, or at least taken off??

Not at all, I just don't want my kids to want to see it because their friends are seeing it, because their parents don't know about the depth of the movie! (And yes, I train my kids to not want to see it, but everyone knows the power friends have over you versus your parents)
My religion is not weak at all, I'm just afraid of the material were using these days that suggest freedom of speech.
I'm actually surprised the movies that you listed were tolerated.
The only difference is they were talking about the STORY of Christianity, while this movie makes a horrible suggestion towards Christianity, and telling children that wanting to kill God would be acceptable.
Think about the vast differences between this movie and other religous movies.
Your idea of not-wanting-to-see-it-so don't-go-see-it would work for the Passion of the Christ, but this is a WAYY different side to being offensive.
What if we made a movie that gave the idea that its ok to kill Allah, or other religious figures

In the first movie and book, it has notihng to do with killing God, but in the THIRD BOOK, these children try to.
Besides, in the trailer and the movie theres no way theyre going to say or suggest that (like if they create a movie for each book and Im talking hypotheticaly about the third..) as its supposed to be family oriented.
BUT in the book they really do that.
Phillip Pullman (the guy who wrote it) said thats exactly what he was writing, and that the book was about killing God.
Look it up.

Did I miss the part where they took the story of Babel and the story of Sodom and Gamora out of the Bible?
Maybe I missed the part where they denied the whole crusade wars betwwen the Christians and the Muslims over who is God.
The fact is a movie like what you are describing give a Christian the opportunity to teach the lessons behind such stories.
Babel in particular is about a man so vain that he built a tower to shoot an arrow at God. Call me crazy but that is exactly what you are afraid of children learning, that people are vain and that they may challenge God from time to time.
Sodom an Gomora was so sinful that when God sent his angel to save Lot the people ther tried to molest the angel.
Think about it. Moses was not allowed into the promised land because he questioned God.
David saw his kingdom split over not obeying God where Bathsheba was concerned.
Onan was killed by God for masturbating.
Everyone in between Egypt and the promised land was killed by God because of the party at Mount Sinai.
There is a definite love hate thing going on here and the fact you find it in the plot of yet another movie is not surprising to me, but; I seriously see this as more of an opportunity to defend your religion and strengthen your beliefs than to say don't watch this.
After all, you have your temptations in the desert showing you that your faith will be tested but the testing is not the problem. the problem is if you fail to hold to your faith, but really; how strong is your faith if you never test it?
In short, I don't want to see the film banned. I want to see it explained. And in your mind you should always be thinking, given your sentiments so far, "What if God exists?", and let that be your argument to all who say otherwise. There are consequences for blasphemy.
Oh yea, Assuming someone is already a sinner and going to Hell, why wouldn't they want to kill a God that if you see God is going to kill you for being a sinner, that is what happens on judgment day. Take God out of the equation and what you end up with is a person who tells you that on a given day he/she will kill everyone who does not believe in him/her and protect the rest. If you don't believe in him /her then logically it would be in your best interest to protect yourself and kill him/her before he/she can kill you. It is self preservation. Sure, this denies the whole God thing but that is the whole point. Athiests don't believe in God and if they are wrong then "Ooops" and if they are right then self defense. But your argument stays the same, "What if God exists?"
So, leave the movies alone and teach the value of your faith.
Oh and ask yourself what would your God do in such a situation. It gives you reason to think woul he smite them like so many in the old testament or not like Thomas in the new testament. I mean seriously, can you kill a God? If not, what does this matter? It just makes someone seem foolish for trying.....

There's nothing offensive about it. It does not promote atheism. And even if it did, the makers have just as much a right to make it as any movie maker has to make a movie promoting Christianity.
If you have the right to get that movie banned, then anyone who doesn't believe in Jesus will have to be given the right to have movies like "The Passion of the Christ", or any other movie that promotes Christianity banned.
They will also have the right to ban the upcoming "The Ten Commandments".
Would you like to see all video stores be forced to remove any movie that promotes any one religion, Including your own because some hysterical, intolerant person of another belief claims it's "offensive" because it doesn't agree with their religion?
You do not have the right to ban something that you think doesn't agree with your beliefs. This is a free country. If you don't want to go see it, then don't go see it.
What are you so afraid of, anyway? Is your faith so weak that you need to completely ban anything that you perceive to not agree with it?
Sorry if you consider this to be an "annoying " answer, but it's clear that anything that doesn't agree with you is going to be perceived as an annoying answer. You can't ask a question and then make rules about what the answer to the question can be. If you don't want to hear an answer other than your opinion, then why post? Just ask it to yourself, and then answer yourself.

Living in the Bible belt, I'm hoping that a movie like that would be banned from theaters around here. They banned "Birth" with Nicole Kidman (I still haven't seen that movie, tho) so if this movie truly is about killing God, then I will never go to see it, nor will I buy it for my kids when it comes out on DVD.
I would love to see a movie like that taken off, put on a shelf, and forgotten about it.

I don't agree with the movie at all and will not watch it.
However, I will fight to the death for the right of the film makers to make it! It's their right! Just like it's our right to NOT watch it. What we can do as Christians, instead of banning the movie is not to worry about those who do choose to see it. There's not even a need to preach to them. The best way to reach people is by showing them compassion without judgement. God has the ability to touch the heart of His strongest opposer. So let them make this movie. Stand aside and let anyone who wants to see this movie. Then show them love, compassion, understanding and give them an alternative. But, for God's sake, KEEP AMERICA FREE and PROTECT OUR FREEDOMS OF SPEECH AND THOUGHT because your freedoms are my freedoms are his freedoms are her freedoms are their freedoms. Peace :)

No body's making you see this movie.
Please don't stop others from deciding on their own. I'm seeing it because I'm a fan of Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman. I also review movies on my website so I try to see everything playing in my area if possible or wait for it on DVD.

My question is, why would you want it banned? I respect that you don't agree with it, but what about all the other people who think it's ok? Why are you're views on this so much more important that you feel you have the ability to force them on others?
