You need a slip-joint washer. It is either 1-1/4" or 1-1/2" in size, depending on the size of your trap. The washer has a tapered side that goes to the wall. Take the short side of your trap to a hardware store for the correct size.

It may have been an "O" ring in your case but typically it's a "Compresion Washer" Tapered slightly to SEAT in the plumbing as the NUT is tightened. I usually advise NEW anytime a "P" trap is removed.

Buy one just like the one you took off. Also the washer in that joint may need a replacement . Go to a good plumbing store and pick their brains, Talk is cheap!

buy a new trap kit from the local hardware store. it should cost about $5 or so, and will come with new compression seals as well.

lavatory drains are inch and a quarter versus inch and a half for kitchen drains....if lines are plastic be careful not to muscle up on them to much.metal lines tighten up best with adjustable pliars.

Its OK. GO to the tore and buy something called plumber's tape. tape the threads and try again. This will fix your problem. If you've already done this and its still leaking, then I don't know. Sorry.
