Ban it. The older kids have spoilt it by damaging and insulting people on their doorstep.

It's a difficult one - and it's really a case of a stupid minority spoiling it for the rest. I'm from the UK, but living in a small expat community abroad right now, and last night, we had a great time. What happens here is that a list is put up at the primary school and anybody who's willing to have trick-or-treaters come round to their house puts their name and house number on the list. Then, on the morning of Halloween, the children are all given a list of the houses they can go to, and everyone just goes from house to house from 5 until 7 when it stops. This works beautifully as the kids only go to houses on the list, so nobody who doesn't want to take part is bothered, and the kids know they're going to get a nice welcome. My kids had a great time.
Those of us from the UK were talking about how much nicer it was doing it this way, and what a great system it is rather than having 15 year olds in masks menacing old ladies late in the evening.

No I don't think it should be banned because it's fun for the kids but I think it should be regulated. Kids should be accompanied by adults and maybe the parents or schools can set up something where the kids go in groups with adults. They should respect the people who's doors they knock at and trick or treat.
I agree with the answerer above about people putting thier names up at schools for if they want to be visited by trick or treaters.

Less and less homes are lit-up and welcoming kids on Halloween than previous years. I don't know what that means.
Maybe people are making their own minds up to not bother to give out candy anymore. So your question won't matter if this continues anyway.
What a shame because there are still a lot of kids going door to door on Halloween nite. It won't be as enjoyable if it continues to be less homes participating and if that trend keeps up it may very well be the end of it anyway.
I hope that doesn't happen, there are still quite a few decent participants who go all out to decorate their homes and to dress up for the kiddies.
But like I mentioned about this trend to not give out candy--people just change so much they aren't the same fun relaxed beings of my youth anymore, so sad.
