Immigration staff at Heathrow have wide powers to cancel people's visas etc.

Doesn't Murphy's law tell you that these powers will be inappropriately used ?

How do you give people powers and try to ensure the powers aren't inappropriately used ?

Answer:

You give people wisdom before you give them power.

Power without wisdom leads to destruction; but the exercise of that power with wisdom leads to life.

This is very much a question that perplexes Theologians as well. God gives us gifts of insight, knowledge, and courage just to name a few. So what does He do to ensure we used them properly? He sends angels, prophets and other advocates to us to make sure we do because he also had granted us free will.

This kind of thinking is a bit way off from your topic but I only wrote it as an example. Government no matter from what country, gives power to bureaucrats hoping that they use those powers for good and in good faith. You cannot truely control the way a person uses that power because they have the freedom to choose only create guidlines that could hopefully curb anyone from abusing their gift.

Murphy's Law of "Anything that can go wrong, will." doesn't apply here since we're talking not talking about the extremes of bad and good. Though the refusal of a Visa, for example, is a negative outcome the opposite is still possible.

Yes Murphy's Law does. Best way to ensure no abuse now is to encourage a Monetary Enlightenment to do for this age what The Age Of Reason was supposed to do for The18th Century.Redifine what Reason is. Mixing two ideas together from two different times. discredit moneatry belief in Free Trade and the like. There is still room for more enlightenment and once Monetary Belief is seen as akin to religion it can be relegated to a church of it's own separate from state if ny wish to still believe in it.

If you hadn't thrown in the Murphy's law thing this would have been much easier... there must be ethical guidelines, and, there must be people with integrity in these positions. And, the penalties for breaking these ethical guidelines must be stiff. It's a sad thing that power is so abused in our society, and it seems to be on all levels... doesn't say a lot for us does it? Ah... for a few good men...
