Water. I have had both birth experiences...and water was better BY FAR! I had a LOT less bleeding and also bounced back quicker than when I had the epidural.

Well I believe that epidural is a last resort and would try some of these methods first to combat pain...

Hot showers/baths
Hot heat packs on lower back and stomach
TENS machine
Gas and Air
Pethedine

I tried first the hot shower, then heat packs and then pethedine at the end for dilation and rest. this worked wonderfully. I did it with both labours and got through them fine. It hurt like hell too but was worth it not to be hooked up to a machine and unable to move around and have an active labour. I firmly believed in my ability to give birth without someone sticking a huge needle into my spinal column!

Make the decision that works for you, just research all the options first.

Just remember if you are having your baby in a hospital, you cannot do half of the things these people are telling you to do so be prepared for that... I am personally going for an IV when I cannot take it anymore. Everyone in my family has had back problems after getting an epidural so I am a little freaked. I am sure they work wonders but that is not a risk I am willing to take. That is a choice you and your doctor need to talk about.

there aren't many other pharmaceutical pain relief options. doctors are leery about putting medication through a peripheral IV because it is not safe for the baby. other options are focus and breathing techniques, water delivery, rolling around on a stability ball and massage-all of these options have very limited relief.

hypnosis-as far as the epidural, I had one, I actually enjoyed it. I had no problems during or after with it. As far as what the woman below me said, that's not exactly true. It is a lot harder on the baby. Research it, she obviously hasn't.

Don't listen to these women. Your pain is your pain. There's nothing wrong with having a Cesarean.
