I can always start something, but never finish it. I want to write and I've actually written a few things, but I've never actually finished any of them.

I write a lot, and I get through about three fourths of the story and by then though I'm not as enthusiastic about it. I have no one to motivate me at home--or anyone else for that matter. And it's really hard for me to actually go through and finish something because of that fact.

How do you keep your eye on the prize? I really want to finish something for once. And no that's not motivating enough. I need something that will keep me working.

You sound just like me! My stories always have to be either very short, or they never get finished. Something that helps motivate me to write is to read a book that is sort of a celebration of writing. There are lots of books out there by various authors that sort of encourage and celebrate writing. My favorite is by Ray Bradbury, "Zen in the Art of Writing." It's a collection of essays by Bradbury that tell you how he started writing and what motivated him. It's really good and his style of writing makes it extremely interesting to read. Also, just try to make sure that you are writing about something that you enjoy writing about. Sometimes I will start writing a story that I think sounds interesting, but I discover as I am writing that I really don't enjoy writing that type of story. Just try to find your own style and don't worry about anything else.

The best way I've found to motivate myself is by doing something I really care about in the first place. If you get bored with what your doing then you really didn't want to do it in the first place but try this. Walk away from your writing about an hour and go back to it. This will give you time to refresh your brain. If that doesn't work walk away for 1 day but set a certain time for the next day to go back to work again. Make sure you stick to the time line or you will never get anything done. Everyone needs a short break once in a while to wake up their body and brain. Go for a short walk might help.

I always tell myself that I can make it. If you really want to stand out, visualize yourself in the future. Do you like that picture of yourself frustated because you never completed anything? Or do you want to let people know what you are all about and your talents?
Its a pretty hard journey. But I went and Im still going thru it.
Im an aspiring artist, and I always told myself that I wanted to begin in the artistic business early. But I never got the motivation and never ended a good drawing. So I asked myself the same questions. What if I end up doing something I dont like because I wasnt motivated enough to do what I like?
And guess what? Im actually starting to get my name out there, and winning contests and showing my works!
Also, If you want more motivation, show someone what you have been writing. Let them critize it. By the things they will tell you, good or bad, it will motivate you to write more and better.
Good Luck and get motivated!!

The truth is, only you could motivate yourself. I've been a fan fiction/original story writer for almost five years now but still, there will come a point when I would encounter an immense write block.

And to motivate myself, I usually listen to classical music or jazz to clear and refresh my mind. Or sometimes, reading a good book is a good motivation to continue writing your story.

Hope that helped.

I usually take a walk through a book store. I look at different titles, browse through a few pages, and check for book signings that may be coming soon. I figure it this way. What I see on the shelf is a fraction of the books that are published every year. If these people can do it, so can I. Then I get back to it.

Good Luck!

Make a list, then break it into manageable chunks. Make sure you cross off each item from the list. If you make a break from the list and complete some other household chore, go back to the list, write that thing down, then cross it off. It can give you a good sense of satisfaction to see the list being completed. Bribe yourself: If I do a load of laundry, I can go on Yahoo for 10 minutes. If I finish cleaning the floor, I can play 5 games of Bejeweled Blitz. I can watch 1/2 hr of tv while folding the laundry. It takes a while, but the list gets done.

You're the only one who can motivate yourself. Once you finish something and even get it published, it will do wonders for you and you will be able to keep more motivated. Good luck...you can do it. Eliminate your distractions -- shoot the TV --- do what you have to do to finish what you start.

Everyday you write, after you finish, let someone read it. If your story is good they will bug you to hurry up and finish. If your story sucks, they wont bother you for it and its probably a good thing that you dont finish a lousy story.
