Howlin' Wolf ("I Ain't Superstitious", "Little Red Rooster" , "Smokestack Lightning" , and "The Lemon Song") set the HM stones a rolling
Eddie Cochran and Bo Diddley also contributed much to what we consider heavy metal.
The Chaps/The Outlaws (1960) are also a good source for UK blues - and a direct precursor band to Deep Purple.

John Lennon claimed that The Beatles' "Ticket To Ride" was the first heavy metal song, and I guess you can hear some elements of it there.

no, I do not think Helter Skelter is heavy metal. I think if you listen to The Who playing live (LIVE AT LEEDS) you will hear some heavy metal music.
