Bettas are tropical fish and contrary to popular belief, they prefer heated water - 78-82 degrees.
Most goldfish have the potential to grow to over 12" long - definitely not a good choice for a small bowl.
I'd recommend at minimum, a tank like this one - http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+3730+9885&pcatid=9885.
It's 2.5 gallons, has a very small footprint, yet provides a mechanical filter, lid and light. Just add a small heater and you've made a very nice home for a Betta or a few danios or tetras.
Do a little research on setting up a new tank, cycling it, how to do maintenance and water changes etc.
Good luck!

Goldfish do well even in cold water. I had some outside in a opnd until it started getting in the 40's at night, at which time I brought them in, and they are still doing well a year later! Some people leave goldfish out all year if their pond's deep enough. I'm sure it doesn't get as cold as that in your room. Cooler water slows down the fish's metabolism, which in turn keeps the water cleaner because they are not processing as much food as quickly. Try this site for more info:

Get goldfish, they strive in cold water, or just get a little heater for the fish tank, they are like 10-20 dollars for one. If you want fish u dont need to worry bout heater go goldfish, but they are kinda hard to take care of seeing as they poop alot. you would have to have a really good filter, or clean the water alot, if you get tropical fish, make sure you got a heater, and rock salt. put about 1 tablespoon, for every 10 gallons, half for 5 gallon tanks. and make sure to keep the water bout 78-80 degrees
hope this helps, if you want you can email me for more information.

Did you know some people put there Fish in the fridge at night!??!! they actually say they live longer because, well i dont know why, i guess the goldfish body adores it or something. my room gets pretty cold at night too. especially in the winter, and today, i just got a two cute little gold fish, but maybe you could get like a pretty big bowl, fill it with gravel (you know, not fill it ! lol) and plants. (plastic) and maybe if the little fishys get cold they can be warm in the plants. At least that is what i do. OoOr, you could feed them alot until they get fat and are nice in cozy. like eskimos! (sorry eskimos, i meant the house idea, no offence!) Well, That is just my view on it. And i say go for it! Good luck,( and if you wanted to know, i named my two goldfish Mr. Banks and Moe.) lol i am so bored. okay bye!

You could have a 20 gal.tank. Then put either 2 goldfishes or 2 angelfishes, as they are cold water fishes and can survive up to 5 C

You can do 3 things:
1-Get a small tank, a 5 gallon tank is a good size. You absolutely HAVE to get a filter. If you don't get one, your fish will only live up to 2 weeks.
2-Get fish that like cold water, like goldfish. To find out which other fish like cold water, do a search on www.google.com
3-Get an aquarium heater at petsmart, petco, meijer, wal-mart or your local pet store.
Many people make the mistake of not researching keeping a tank before getting one. Then, they become disappointed when their new fish die the next day they bought them. Don't be one of these people!
Borrow books on fish keeping and do tons of research.

Most fish live in cold water. Try a heating thing for your tank. I have a little pond outside my house, during the winter the water freezes. accept for where i put the heater. I have goldfish in it and they live all year round.

i am sure that somewhere in your room you would be ablee to fit a little tank in there. i have a 20 litre hexagon tank in my room and that is unheated. I have rosie barbs and Neon tetras in it and they seem to love it. The light Keeps them warm enough and i only have to clean it once a fortnight. not only that they are very bright and you can have lots of them because they like living in schools.
and contrary to prior belief Bettas are actually happier and more active in larger tanks and community tanks, not litttle cubes.
imagine what you would feel like being locked up in a little cage.
