People like Metallica because of their albums up to the black album. When they veered off and tried something different people didn't really respond much, but because of the impact they had with their early albums they still have a huge fan base. People would love to see Metallica come out with some new material similar to their older stuff, but I don't think Metallica knows that (just watch the their movie Some Kind of Monster). If you try and think about Metallica back in the old days when they had ideas and originality and then you look at them now trying to come up with ideas, you seriously wonder WTF happened!

I always trusted the guys, ever since Kill Em All up to St. Anger, and I love every album because every album has its signature. I'm particularly fond of their 90s work, fav. album the black album, but I think Metallica will be big and strong as always.

Oh my, interesting question indeed.
Don't get me wrong, I love Metallica and all that jazz but St. Anger dissapointed me. I am really, really hoping that this Rick fellow will help them get back to the amazing music they made before.
I'm waiting for them to make another "Orion" or "To Live Is To Die". Those songs are just fantastic.
Good question though...

since rubin is producing it, it might be good. this is metallica's last chance with me. if the new album is another st. anger, i will no longer have any faith whatsoever in them

it all depends on their marketing approach. there is deffinately a market for heavy metal. They need to devolope a pitch that will grab all the rockers attention. If there is no marketing strategy implemented then they will still be old news.
