About a week ago my roommate clogged the toilet but was able to plunge it and it worked normally for a couple of days. Now when we flush the toilet it fills nearly to the rim and then slowly drains, but not completely. We've tried to plunge it again and we've also tried the dish washing liquid plus hot water trick. They don't work. Any suggestions before we have to call a plumber.

Go to the plumbing section at ACE Hardware or HD and look for a "blaster". It goes in the pipe and you pump it up with air. Once it gets to the point where it can't hold any more air, it blasts all the air out through the pipe and hopefully getting rid of your clog.

I have one that works with water but the air thing is probably a lot easier to use.

What clogged the toilet? (as a plumber) I often get similar calls from customers; they plunged it and it cleared for a day or two. What generally happens is there is something stuck in the trap of the toilet bowl, that allows some water to flow when flushed, after each flush a little more "debris" in the form of doo doo and toilet paper gets caught on the stuck item and reduces the flow until it does not flush at all. Then when you plunge it the force of the water clears the debris but not the item. you will need to run a toilet auger (toilet snake) to retrieve the item and if that fails the toilet will need to be pulled and the auger run from the other side. in short call a plumber. We ain't so bad (except on a full moon)

Make sure you have a really good plunger and try plunging it. It may take 10-15 times before it clears (if it's going to clear). I've spent hours unplugging toilets.
The 1.6 gallon jobs get stopped up pretty easy.

If that doesn't work go to the hardware store and buy a toilet auger. The auger should clear the blockage and save the $100.00 you would spend on a plumber.
Augers usually run $10 - $20.

The junk your stupid friend clogged the toilet up with is still there somewhere in the sewer line causing backup. You will have to get a sewer line auger and clear the line in this manner.

I'll confirm William C's method. It works and won't charge you $90 an hour. It's safe, cheap, and at least worth a try. If for some reason it doesn't work, then you can call in the overpriced pros.
note: you do have to commit to your seal in the bowl, lotsa towels and you're going to get your hands wet.

Easy fix. Get garden hose, run through window, put business end in bowl, pack towels around business end, hold towels tightly with hands, turn water on, boom, clog will be pushed out by water pressure.
This is a two person deal, one to hold end of hose, one to turn water on. Have never had this fail. Let me know if you were successful.

Sounds like there is stilll a clog down there, you probably need a plumber to snake it out.
