they recommend no earlyer than 4 months but most drs want you to wait a minimum of 6 months and are even now saying they dont really need solids that entire first year! My daughter is 8 months and just now becomming interested in food where as my son was getting rice cereal at 2 months. I do know if you start early its rice ceral only and ONLY on a SPOON no bottles of cereal. I got special permission because he would not stop nursing and he got cereal twice a day once in the morning (2 tablespoons) and once at our dinner time (3-4 tablespoons). Its something that only the peditrician can tell you.

How does he act after he's chugged it? Does he act satisfied? Is he groggy? Or, does he seem like he could use a little more?

Does he eat at a constant interval? Or, is he reverting to the newborn pattern of every one to two hours?

I started both my boys at three months - with the recommendation of TWO peditricans. Sometimes it is necessary to start them earlier. With my first, he was like your grandson chugging the 8 oz bottles and growing like a weed. I was breastfeeding and supplementing with bottles until my supply caught up with him. Both peds said go ahead and start solids. Finally our feeds went back to every three hours.

With my second he had gerd. This time I could use a rice cereal or milk thickener. I just opted for the rice cereal. The idea of a thickening agent made me leary. What was it? A chemical concotion? My ped said rice cereal was just as good and not any worse allergy wise than the thickening "agent".

My newborn is now four months and starting solids. He's still breastfeeding every three/four hours. I knew he needed more than the tablespoon of cereal when he reverted to want to eat every one to two hours after going nearly four for about a month.

Hope this helps you!

I tried to wait until 6 months. Mine is breastfed and 4 months. Today I decided that no matter what the text book says... I know my baby and he is ready. I resisted at 3 months when he had a growth spurt and was on me 2-9 times every two hours for 3 days. I made it through that (he is my second child.. with my first one I had time to cluster feed more). Now he is 4 months and teething off and on. He is waking up between 3-10 times a night and is becoming restless and more fussy. Last night he was awake for hours (until 3 am). He just needs food... he is getting restless and handles teething much worse with the restlessness. I felt he needed food, text book or none. I know my baby and he was ready. So I gave him food today at 17 weeks old (almost 18).

hats definitely too young. Babies should not be introduced to solid food earlier than 4 months old because they can develop allergies. Also, cow's milk should not be introduced before the first birthday because the digestive system cant adequately digest the milk protein; it has elements like sodium, potassium and chloride, which might be too much for the baby's kidneys; and probably more importantly cow's milk doesnt have all the vitamins like iron, for example, that are vital to your baby's growth and development. Speak with your pediatrician.

i don't think anything in the bottle other than formula, breastmilk or water is appropriate for an 8 week old. 4 months would be the youngest to start first foods in my opinion as their digestive tract can possibly not handle the cereal yet. he may get very constipated too.

Yeah, that is a bit young. Introduce cereal when he can sit on his own.

BTW - my little one eats an average of 32 ounces a day.
