Devestating to the people, plants, animals and structures that are within a critical distance of the explosion. Long term damage to any living thing downwind.

The damage is dependent upon the size and type of weapon and where it was exploded. (Above ground, underground, in the air).

See Wikipedia for more details on the area effected: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_nuclear_explosions

A table showing the area of effect is shown in the above article. Note, there are various effects that vary with distance.
Also, you might look at nuclear weapon yield. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_weapon_yield .

Biggest nuke every exploded is 50 Megatons. But most llargemodern day weapons are typically 1 Megaton.

Insufficient information to answer the question.

Are you talking a micro-nuke or a 5 Megaton bomb?
Are you talking an atomic bomb or a hydrogen bomb or a neutron bomb? Until you define what kind of bomb and how big, the area effected can not be determined.
