All of a sudden out of nowhere the birds just start to attack. It is a metaphor for Mother Nature fighting back against the abuses it has been suffering at the hand of mankind for centuries. Its scary because the birds behavior is completely out of character - instead of being afraid of people they becomes aggressive towards people - not your typical bird behavior at all.

I think that its just the fact that we always count birds out when we think about danger, they don't seem to be a threat to us. In the movie birds they are presented as a very real threat and what makes it scary is what if all the birds went crazy one day what would we do about it, it could happen. And where i leave there is a guy who feeds birds and there is always hundreds of them around and every time i drive bye they start flying at my car and that **** freaks me out because of that movie and that seen in the new Resident Evil extinction where the birds kill like half of the people that are left.

Movies from the Alfred Hitchcock era are more about suspense than today's predictable blood and gore.

It is a dated movie and therefor is maybe not scary to you. But imagine if you were walking down the street and a whole bunch of birds tried to kill you. The premise is scary. Hitchcock isn't for everyone.

Alfred Hitchcock started out with an innocent premise. Tippi Hedron, as spoiled society girl "Myra" sees lawyer "Mitch" as played by Rod Taylor in a petshop, and takes a liking to him. She tries to cozy up to him by pretending to be a saleswoman, and attempts to sell him a couple of Love Birds, but he plays her for a fool because he has recognized her and remember what a spoiled brat she could be. She gets mad, and vows to get even, but she is still taken by Mitch. She finds out that he lives on a small island, and goes off to see him to play the joke out. On the way, she is briefly attacked by some gulls.
As the movie moves along, Melanie, Mitch, his daughter Cathy (Veronica Cartwright,) and Annie, the school-teacher who had a long-ago crush on Mitch, (Suzanne Pleshette) are all caught up in the drama as the birds begin to flock in great numbers, attacking children on a playground as well as breaking into homes and killing the people inside.
All along, you are treated to Hitchcock's absolute mastery of the suspense story. It might start with a few birds perched on a wire, then a moment later, there are hundreds, then thousands. You believe that they are all aware of you, and are thirsting for your blood, just waiting for their time to get even.
I first saw this movie years ago, but it still works for me. Every time I've seen this movie again, I still pause if I go outside and see a number of birds perched on a telephone pole, wondering if all of those beady eyes are plotting my bloody demise ;)

Supposedly he got the idea from the birds around Morro Bay (california) that all contracted some crazy virus or something that made them a little cookoo.

what's scary about it is that hitchcock takes something as innocent looking as a regular bird, and has them attack people. the scare is in seeing something that's unexpected.

It's not exactly a horror movie..it's supposed to be more creepy..the what would happen if the norm "birds we see everyday" suddenly turned on you..and they outnumbered you..what would you do..
I would feel pretty creeped out if all the birds in my neighbourhood stopped flying and just sat there and stared at me.

It's apsychological thing. Plus, it's just freaky. Random birds, you know? Attacking you? Trying to killlll as if they were, like, undead zombies of doom. Except they're not. They're fluffy cute lil birdies like Tweety and such. :D
