You know, the cal states and many state universities used to be free. But then all these social programs started up and the government had to cut funding for education to pay for welfare and other issues. Man, the good old days before we had to pay for everyone's issues. But this is what America chose and its hard to go back to those days when if you had trouble you solved it yourself instead of having the government come try fix everything.

When enough people get stupid enough to let the government tax the crap out of them to pay for it. Then just like everything the govt gets its mitts on, the quality of the education will suffer greatly. You or any other person does not deserve to get higher education at everybody elses expense. If you want to work your way through college go for it, lots of people do it and it will build your character. Sitting and wondering why the govt wont take more of everybody elses money to educate you wont build squat. Communist/ socialist systems where the govt controls everything steals your freedoms, and without competition there is no reason to strive for bigger and better things. America became great in a short while because capitalism works, period

Never. We live in a completely capitalist society. So long as there is money to be made with higher education, and so long as the government is not willing to socialize it, we'll be paying an arm and a leg for higher education. It would involve all of America paying higher taxes to pay for it. Honestly, I don't see that ever changing.

when we're prepared for college to become meaningless, I suppose.
there's a reason that higher education is a semi-elite thing to have. first off, the quality of education would seriously suffer if it was being offered for free. we just don't have the resources to provide a college education for everyone who wants it PLUS maintain the standard that we have. second, if everyone went to college, then you would have to get a Ph.D. just to be competitive in the workplace.
