McDonalds(chain) invented it AFTER the McDonald brothers sold the chain. Before that it was a car hop buisness. The McDonald Bros. sold for 1,000,000 each. :)

Drive thru came after car hos so i'd sidspect the 1950's at end of decade... proably McDonalds or Jack in the Box..

I believe the first drive thru in southern California was In n Out
