A Racist: A racist is one who is both privileged and socialized on the basis of race by a white supremacist (racist) system. The term applies to all white people (i.e. people of European descent) living in the United States regardless of class, gender, religion, culture or sexuality. By this definition, people of color cannot be racists, because as peoples within the U.S. system they do not have the power to back up their prejudices, hostilities or acts of discrimination."

They may have "corrected" the definition, but see this link:

Apparently this was from the University of Delaware. But since there is no liberal bias in higher education, I am struggling to believe that this is true.

Where the heck did you get that definition? I've taken a lot of race and diversity courses in my time, and not a single one of them would use that definition. Either your source is full of crap, or you misunderstood or misinterpreted what you heard. There IS some truth to the fact that the underprivileged cannot back up their prejudices, and that IS a problem in the United States, but that does not make "racism" a whites-only concept. In other countries, quite the opposite can happen. What most diversity professors would argue is not that blacks can't be racist by definition, but that a minority with no power, by definition, cannot be a racist in an institutional way. I, personally, define a racist like this: anyone who considers themselves better than another person because of their race. That is different than institutional racism, which is more akin to what you are describing, minus the idea that it can only apply to whites (though it does only apply to whites in America). What does all this mean? It means that racism, as well as most other idealogues, is complex and multi-faceted. That is why most people should be careful about throwing around terms like this, because a lot of people who do it don't even really know what they are talking about. Excellent question!

Well, I will say this: This definition is very superficial and is almost self-congratulatory in nature.
I do agree that white supremacy and racism go hand in hand, but I don't believe that racism happens because certain people are "privileged and socialized". Racism goes much much deeper than that.
Equally, there are people of color who believe that people of color cannot be racist. I respectfully disagree with that statement because it assumes the the definition of racism vis a vis one people, one point of view, one vantage point, one trajectory.
Mr Taco: u've got a good dialog going there, but I very much disagree that people of color cannot back up their prejudices:).

If it was true that people of color cannot back up their prejudices, hostilities, or acts of discrimination, then it would be a good definition.
Since minorities are able to own businesses, fill management positions, and behave in an aggressive/hostile manner (Jena 6), this definition sucks.

Idk. I am white with Greek and Italian Ancestry. But in the 30's here in LA they would put signs in the local shops saying
"No Greeks and No Rats in this store" So I guess just being white kinda messes up your definition.
Anyway, once and for all there is only one race. It's called the Human Race. Period.
Furthermore there are just plain too many idiots in the universities these days.

Racist: any person who targets any other person due to their being of a different race or color...
I think this is a much simpler more honest definition of Racist.

Are you trying to have people help you with your homework? It is one attempt at defining racism. And typically in University course material, statements like these are thrown at students to help start a discussion.
