Awww... you shouldn't have said YES in the first place, sweetie. Anyway, if you've still got time to make things right between the two of you, I guess you should summon the guts to come forward and tell him honestly what you really feel about him. He seemed like a sweet dude, if you could approach him and open up nicely, he might understand your situation.
I hope you've learned a lesson from this. Good luck!

Can I ask a question? Why would you say yes 'as a joke?'
Look at it this way, you can either tell him that you changed your mind and your girlfriends need someone to go with (tell him in a nice, tactful way), you can tell him you were screwing with him, which personally I wouldn't advise, or you could go to the dance with a very good friend and just have a good time. Some of my best memories of prom and homecoming, were when I went with my best friend, whom I had no sexual interest in, but we got along very well.
If there is someone else you are interested in romantically and you want to ask him, ask yourself this. Would you like some guy to do that to you? Is it worth possibly hurting your friendship with this guy you're tentatively going with? It's all up to you, but I'd try to handle it tactfully if you are going to back out on him. Good luck.

Oooops you did it again....!
You've got to go to the dance. There is no choice. If you pull out now you'll cause a lot of heartache for everyone...including yourself.
I think you need to go into damage control. Tell him that your so glad that you're going to the dance with him, cause you'd hate to get stuck with some sleazy a**hole that thought he was going to get lucky. Tell him you feel a lot better going with him cause you can just go to the dance, enjoy it as a group of friends and then go home, (or to the party) with no pressure worrying about someone trying to crack onto you.
He won't admit that he had the same ideas, and if you're lucky he might come up with an excuse as to why he can't take you after all!
If he does take you at least he knows it will be a no romance night. make sure you thank him and be appreciative that someone cares that much about you.
Cheers
Bronco.

Well, if you like him as a friend then go. Tell him that you were joking when you said yes, but if he wishes to take you then sure, why not. Just make sure he knows how you feel towards him. Or just use the phrase, Oh what a great friend you are. you know mention friendship a lot.

What is wrong with you?! Saying yes as a joke... you are cruel. You should buy him the ticket as an apology. You should also tell him that you were joking and will still go with him, but as friends only.

If he is a really good friend talk to him about it or drop a hint like 'Do you know I am really looking forward to going to the dance with you as it will be nice not having to deal with all those awkward romantic moments as it's not as if you would try it on with me' or something to that effect.

If no one else has asked you, go with him. Make sure you don't act like you actually do like him as anything but a really good friend at the dance, though.

well, you should never have said yes, but now just go and have fun You like him as a friend but many relationships have been built on less than that and going to one dance doesn't change the friendship unless you let it.

Either go with him to see if maybe you feel something for him or just tell him the truth. If he really likes you he'll understand and he won't want to lose you as a friend. Good Luck!!!
