How will language complement my film degree?

Question

I am looking to double major at a UC or CSU in film and Chinese {or film and Asian studies or film and Japanese}.

Yet, I'm finding difficulty figuring how it will complement my film degree, as I've alway wanted to learn a language and I've became interested in the language since there is a big Chinese-American population at the community college I am attending in the Bay Area...

Any ideas?

It would make it possible for you to do one of two things. You could either make films for people who spoke Chinese or Japanese. OR it would make it possible for you to make films that were filled with Asian concepts or characters for English speakers.

Couldn't you study the films in their original state rather than via translation? Understanding something in the culture within which it was created is important. I would think it would work out nicely. I am thinking of the great masters such as Akira Kurosawa and Zhang Yimou.

Both Chinese and Japanese are difficult to learn and there are many different dialects. But why not try to do it? Reportedly American actress Mira Sorvino speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese and lived in China for awhile. I am sure her major incorporated the two areas you are interested in.

You don't say what you want to do with your film degree. If you are making films, knowing Chinese or Japanese might give you insights to these cultures that you could work into your movies. If you want to focus on film history, knowing one of these languages will allow you to view films made in Asia with more understanding. I hope this helps.
