He was not a winner before he managed the Yankees. He had losing seasons at St. Louis, Atlanta, and with the Mets before coming to the Yankees. With the all stars he inherited, they should have won, no matter who was managing the Yankees.

Of course he's over-rated. He should have about 8 World Series won, with that money that was spent on his team. But loser Joe not only got out managed by Francona, but Mike Sciossia made a habit of it too.
He was beat in the World Series by Arizona, and Florida, both with much less on the payroll then Torre's Yankees had, problem was, out managed again.
He had one of the best players of our time (Alex Rodriguez), but for awhile he had him slated in the 8th slot, before Torre finally cut his ego loose, and let him hit clean up where he put up MVP numbers.
As for winning Manager of the year with other teams? Big deal. Larry Dierker, Don Baylor and Larry Bowa all won the same award, I guess they are geniuses too, huh? Dusty Baker won it 3 times, ask Cub fans what they think of him.
Dodgers fan will say the same after loser Joe is done in LA LA land.

Torre was just the right man for the job of managing the Yankees. It was the perfect situation and he was the right man for the job. He wasn't any good before and I doubt he'll be any good at his next job.

Kuff- All that stuff you posted about most this and second that is because he had such a long tenure. Third in voting for manager of the year? BFD. Managed 2 perfect games? I didn't see him throwing any pitches. He was lousy before and he won't do crap w/ the Dodgers.

No,Joe Torre is not over rated.Again,it comes down to the rings.I'll take any manager who has managed, and won 4 MLB world championships. If any manager is over rated its gotta be Bobby Cox,of the Atlanta Braves. All those great Braves teams for 15 years, and 1 world series ring to show for it.

I think most managers tend to have their value overestimated. It's not that difficult to babysit a group of guys, and to fill out a lineup card. It's funny when people talk like Torre did something amazing by managing to take a $200 million payroll to the playoffs - people can talk all they want about chemistry, but talent on the field wins games.

Managers have very little effect on the outcome of a game, and very few change the game. There have been some great ones like McGraw, Weaver, or Selee, but I wouldn't put Torre on that list. He can win with a good team, but not with a poor one.

For Joba below me who says they had no superstars between 1996 and 2000 - during those years, they had Rivera, Jeter, Boggs, Bernie Williams, Cone, Raines, Knoblauch, O'Neill, Pettitte, Clemens, Gooden and El Duque. There are at least five Hall of Famers in that group, and several others who were stars. It's not like Torre worked with a bunch of no-names.

Joe Torre is not overrated. His accomplishments with the Yankees speak volumes. He brought sanity and dignity to the madhouse Bronx Zoo and that counts for a lot.

Joe Torre is overated. He will never win with another team after leaving the Yankees.

And they did win. Torre's best talent was to make those millions of dollars players play well together. Before that Steinbrenners Piggies had trouble getting a manager who didn't have fights with them.

BUT -- You're right. 2004 LCS, Francona, in games 6 and 7, outmanaged Joe, right out of his uniform. He's not a strategist. That will almost certain show up in LA.

No he is a class act and winner and proved himself in New York winning 4 championships including his first year there. He will bring much excitement to the Dodgers.

Joe did everything you could ask of a manger. The 12 seasons he was with the Yanks he made it to the play offs every year. Yeah they didnt win but after the first 162 games the team should understand what they need to do!
