It used to be that you'd get the return envelope with your copyright form within 6 months, but after 9/11 that's gone out the window. Once you file, you're covered soon as it hits the post office, but the form will take 10-12 months to be returned to you with the file numbers now. I've copyrighted two things in the past 2 years and it's taken almost a year to get back to me.
If you're going to move, have a return address on it that you can get the letter back from--like a parent's house or a post office box or something,so the return can GET to you without you forgetting about it months after you've changed addresses.
The copyright site is where all the forms are, it's simple to fill out the paperwork.

The moment you create the work, YOU own the rights to use and copy it. This is what copyright means. No one can publish your work without your permission.
For greater protection, it is advisabe to register your copyright with the US Copyright office. (copyright.gov) It takes a few bucks, but, if you ever have to take legal action against someone stealing your work, the registration is VERY important. You can register a single image, or a collection of images for the same price.
Your registered copyright will be recognized by most of the nations of the world.

this does not stop people copying your work, but it does mean you can take legal action if someone tries to make money from your work without your permission
