The question is debateable--When did it end? When I went to school it was homework everynight in all subjects. It went like this--Math-do questions 1-100 and show your work to get to the answer. History-Read chapters 1-5 and answer all review questions at the end of each chapter--Science--Read Chapters 10-15 and answer all review questions at the end of each Chapter--English-construct these sentences on pages 38 through 50--Literature read chapters 15-20 and write a 500 word essay on what you got out of these chapters. -- Geography--Draw a Map of Spain include all major cities-rivers-Mountain Ranges. I had 5 hours of homework a night--And No Im not 75 years old I went to high School in the 70s and my kids when they went through hardly brought a book Home!!!!!

Historically, homework was frowned upon in American culture. With few students interested in higher education, and due to the necessity to complete daily chores, homework was discouraged not only by parents, but also by the legislature. In 1901, Congress passed an act that effectively abolished homework for those who attended kindergarten through the eighth grade. But, in the 1950s, with increasing pressure on the United States to stay ahead in the Cold War, homework made a resurgence, and children were encouraged to keep up with their Russian counterparts. By the end of the Cold War in the early 1990s, the consensus in American education was overwhelmingly in favor of issuing homework to students of all grade levels.

Also, probably when the very first school was built.
