The civil war was necessary because slavery was allowed to continue after the united states was formed. The main components that lead to the civil war were:
1. Lack of ability to equate the language in the Declaration of independence "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." A little hard to defend when slavery was legal throughout the US at this time.
2. The Constitution when written and retified did not even mention slavery even though all involved knew it was either supported if you were from the south and oppossed by most of the northern states.
3. The three fifths compromise allowed for southern (slave) states to count every 5th slave as three people when determining the number of representatives for states. This increased the influence in passing federal laws because it added representatives (which are votes) when voting on initiatives in congress. Imagine being considered property as a slave and not having any say on how you lead your life, yet you were used to figure the number of representatives allowed to represent a state.
As terrible as allowing slavery to contrinue in America, there were political reasons to keep slavery. Southern states would have seceeded from the union if slavery was outlawed early in the history of the US. The time was needed to allow the federal government to become stronger.

The North and the South had differing opinions concerning economics (ie. slavery).
The North depended on the South for raw materials and the South depended on the North for manufactured goods.
The South believed that the union of the states was voluntary and, objecting to the laws and regulations passed by the government, sought to end their voluntary association, which many Northern politicans objected to.
All previous attempts to mollify the North and the South, to settle their differences, had failed. Neither would give up their point of view, nor accept the other's as being more appropriate.

The northern states (manufacturing) would say, "I'll sell you a plow for X amount of money. Then they would say, "I'll buy your crops for X amount of money". They were setting prices both ways. The southern states wanted to make a deal with European countries to sell crops at a price they set themselves. They were told that the federal government was the only entity authorized to deal with other governments, so they tried to seceed.
The individual northern states pretty much said let them leave and we'll make a new deal with them.
The federal government knew that the north would starve so they went to war.
In order to gain support for the war, they brought up the issues of slavery and human rights. Remember the north also had slaves.
I'm not condoning slavery, it's 100% wrong, but to unravel any mystery, you want to follow the money.

All civil wars stem from same reasons, no matter which country has the civil war.
Fundamental and basic difference in belief ideologies.
It starts with a clash of opinions between factions composed of strong willed leaderships who would not compromise nor take any quarters. These leadership eventually grow and fester.
These men find themselves in power positions and their opinions translate into economic growth or distress for the citizens.
When this happens, the citizens get involved.
Fundamental differenes in opinion. Sharing of wealth. SHaring of power.

The differences between the states.
The north didn't want slavery since it was immoral but the south needed the labor. So conflicts arose on the rights of the slaves and etc.
There were more problems but that is the main one
