It can be time consuming, only if you dont take care of it in the first place. Once you get the initial chemicals just right, you baisicly put sanatizer in everyother day and keep your filters clean. Drain and refill every 3-4 months ,depending on usage. If you buy a good brand ,it should serve many trouble free yrs. They can be expensive to fix ,depending on what goes wrong. Example, just a controll panel can cost $400 or more. Hot springs,Calspa ect are top brands.Atleast $1k per seat. 4-5 seat atleast $5k.

First, you have to have a dedicated 220-volt curcuit with 50-amp breakers for the hot tub. This must include a disconnect that is within view of the hot tub and must be a certain distance from it (so you can't reach the disconnect from while sitting in the tub). This could cost several hundred dollars, depending on how much electrical work is needed at the main panel and how much wiring must be installed.

One option is a product called SofTub, which is a round tub made of foam rubber covered with vinyl. These only require a 110-volt outlet, but it has to be a dedicated 30-amp circuit. The way they work is that the water lines for the recirculating pump are routed through the stator of the motor itself. Then heat from the motor then heats up the water whenever the motor is running. These don't have any seats or anything in them, though, and it doesn't have the fancy jets they put in the hard-shell units. But, hey ... it's a hot tub.

The tub itself will run you at least a coupla-few thousand dollars new. Some have ozone generators in them (an option that costs a coupla-few hundred dollars extra) that eliminates the need for chlorine. This can be preferable, because the chlorine can dry out your skin and it you'll smell like chlorine after you use the tub. Otherwise, you have to periodically put a certain amount of chlorine in, the frequency being determined by how often you use the tub. You also have to use chemicals to keep the pH of the water within a certain range.

The tub will also eventually build up a layer of scum on the tub surfaces that must be periodically cleaned off. This is from body oils, lotions, soap residues, etc. And, it requires you to drain the tub to clean up, otherwise it just gets suspended in the water and settles back onto the tub surfaces. I have found that even the best filters don't effectively keep the water clean to the point that you don't have to change out the water occasionally.
