I want to take a certain country and western song and change the catergory or concept of the song to that of a christian or Southern Gospel song. Can I change the concept of that song without changing any words or title to the song? Just simply the concept?

You can copyright the new song, i would suggest changing the title, but you do have to give all credit in the copyright to the lyricist, but check up the web the copyright laws that surrond the album where that song is. THis is normally on the studio's site.

A number of people have taken opera songs and made into pop tunes. unfortnately in some cases the operas were still in copyright, and the "new" authors were found guilty of infringement. the most famous case was the pop tune "Avalon". Similarly Andrew Lloyd Webber made a settlement for some of the tunes he borrowed. Don't take the work of someone else and claim for yourself. You can write an arrangement for existing tunes, but the copyright remains with the original composer. How ironic it would be to create a christian song by stealing.
