If there is a screen in the faucet, you may get hard water crystalized build up there. You can soak it in white vinegar and then scrub and rinse thoroughly.

I've never seen any stains or algea or the like but I have seen little rocks and my Dad even found a little lizard trapped behind his. Seriously. I don't think it needs to be cleaned, but it doesn't hurt to unscrew it and check to see what may be trapped behind it. While you have it off, run the water a few seconds to get anything out that may be too big to go through the tiny holes, then replace.

calcium does build up their and i believe so does bacteria. Did u know that our toothbrushes also have traces of fecal bacteria?(bacteria in poop)
I doubt bacteria on the faucet is strong enough to make u ill, otherwise i would have bn dead already :I(...so clean it when u clean the sink, no need to clean it every day

If it's constantly wet, it might develop a bit of algae or something. There could also be scale from hard water deposits forming. You would want to remove that.
Also, aerators have fine mesh screens and other parts in them that can collect bits of sand or other deposits that might be in your water. So, I would recommend periodically removing the aerator (they just unscrew, unless they're "welded" in place by the hard water deposits) and back flushing it to remove any debris.

its not necessary, but its less likely to carry germs if you do.
my family doesn't and it leaves calcium buildup which shows that our water is healthier than most, so it is a good Way to monitor what you're drinking but most don't like the flavor of rocks in their water lol!
