Iran's leader calls for purge of liberal professors?

===================

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran's hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called Tuesday for a purge of liberal and secular teachers from the country's universities, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported in another step back to 1980s-style radicalism.

Earlier this year, Iran retired dozens of liberal university professors and teachers. And last November, Ahmadinejad's administration for the first time named a cleric to head the country's oldest university in Tehran amid protests by students over the appointment.

In the early 1980s, shortly after the revolution, Iran sacked hundreds of liberal and leftist university teachers and students.

Sarah you should check again. This period in time is probably the worst to be a university professor. People are getting sacked left and right due to budget cuts at federal funding institutes. This isn't just happening at the little schools either. It's all the way to the top. I know a lot of people out of work due to this administration's budgeting and subsequent war on research and development.

Anyway, my answer to this question is probably because education makes people question their surroundings. That leads to uprising if you p.o. enough people. All governments fear that so, the bad governments like to keep people dumb. Little do they know they just make their country the beyotch of every other country around them that has the capability to overtake them in economics, science, medicine, etc.

Could be because they are being tapped by CIA and Mossad as new leaders of Iran if America does decided to invade. Could be because they are plotting against the government. I'm not surprised if Ahmadinejad is over cautious and they have a reason to. People in Iran now are still suffering and recovering from the Brute Dictatorship of the Shah of Iran that CIA installed in 1953 which ruled ruthlessly and oppressed Iranians all in the interest of American policies.

You're comparing apples and oranges.

The US federal government doesn't control who can be a professor or not. In the case of liberal professors, there are cases where they do not allow dissent to their views by students. That's simply unacceptable. Our universities should be unbiased, or at least allow dissent.

Clearly, Iran is totalitarian.

Because liberals in general look at most issues objectively while conservatives have a habit of injecting emotions into the argument, such as fear, anger, revenge, and religion. You see examples of that every day in America.

Because he doesn't have to tolerate anything he doesn't want to...it's not America over there. We have our say about things here and then guess what, the libs have their say too.
That is where the similarities end, He takes it to an insane level...we just don't like liberal opinions, he wants to kill them.

Besides, I don't think an Iranian liberal is the same as an American liberal.

Are you talking about Democrats or men/women of a "liberal" free point of view? I think you took this out of context. AMDJ wants to smash freedom thinkers. They don't have the same names for parties we do?! WT frick? If he wants power he is going at those who want Democracy , like he is supposed to be ... and not his Revolutionary Guard type rule. The Supreme Leader may remove him soon anyway. I expect a internal coup or mess shall happen. Google Asia Times -Middle East. It's a good resource. Thanks.

Perhaps he sees liberal professors as the weakling defeatists that they are, appeasing the lion in the hopes of being eaten last. He probably has more respect for enemies who stand up and fight.

I can't remember a single purge of left-wing, nutjob professors in theUSA. That's the whole thing about America, we let the leftwing nutjobs say anything they want, even the ones who try to compare Conservatives to Iranian kooks.
