Portugal was never, and is not, in any way diplomatic bond with the Vatican.
But yes, there is a theory, hundreds of year old, actually, that sugests that Columbus, instead of italian from Genoa was from the southern village of Cuba (yes, it was called that way since the 12th century) in Portugal and that he was a secret agen tof the portuguese king that lead the spanish on purpose to north america so that the portuguese were left alone with the far more important sea-route around africa to India, which they managed to do...
There are many strange facts: Columbus, suposedly a poor son of a italian weaver, arrived in Portugal in the 1460's, a couple of years later this poor man was, get a look at this:
- married to the daughter of the GOVERNOR of the island of Porto Santo, a nobleman, member of the court, cousin of the portuguese king. Columbus married his daughter and had a portuguese son.
- Officially, the reason why he went to Spain was the fact that first, his wife died, and second, he suposedly fled because he was part of a conspiracy to kill the portuguese king.
- When in Seville, Spain, he was still called by the portuguese king in some letters, "our very special friend in Seville"...
- When he returned from the discovery, in 1492, do you think he headed straight to Spain? No, he first docked in Porto Santo, where he was received as a hero (don't forget that Spain and Portugal were rivals), spend 4 days there and then sailed to... Spain? No, Lisbon where he was given a private audience with the portuguese king, the same that he suposedly wanted to kill... He was in Lisbon 2 days and then he went to.... the portuguese city of Santarém where he was given a private audience with the queen of Portugal, that treated him like family...
He finally set sail to... the city of Lagos in southern Portugal, where he spend another couple of days and from there, finally, sailed to Seville. Weird, no?
There is NO WAY the poor son of a weaver, almost illiterate, is, a couple of years later, married to a noblewoman from the family of the king of Portugal, a skilled sailor, with knowledges of mathmatics and astronomy (he predicted an eclipse in the island of Hispaniola, now Haiti/Dominican Republic). Furthermore, it wasn't just anybody who had PRIVATE audiences with both the king and queen of the then most powerful country on earth...
The portuguese policy of those days was famous for being ultra-secret, there are rumours that the portuguese allready had reached Canada and Manhattan island in the 1450's, don't forget that he Azores, portuguese islands were discovered in the 1420's and they are more or less half-way to the americas.
But no one will ever know, unless somewhere some document appears proving this, much of the original documents were destroyed in the giant earthquake of Lisbon in 1755.
There are several books exploring this theory, of a Columbus portuguese secret agent, just google them up.
And in April, it's going to come out in the USA a book, a fictional novel called The Codex 632 by a portuguese writer, exploring the theory and building a fictional, although historically accurate, story about the portuguese origins of Columbus, check it out because it's very interesting.
In the meantime, if you ever come to Portugal, you can check the small village of Cuba in the southern region of the Alentejo, were many of the portuguese explorers were from...
Last year the mayor of the village inaugurated a statue of Columbus in the main square, with the inscription "The most famous son of our village"...
