Guy Fawkes Night, after the very real person, Guy Fawkes. He was Catholic and tried to blow up parliament as part of what would now be called a terrorist conspiracy at a time when the government was being very oppressive to Catholics. He got caught before parliament opened and took the fall for all his fellow conspirators. I don't remember how many of the others were caught, but I do know Guy Fawkes was tortured extensively and then killed. He signed documents before and after his interrogation and the 'after' signature is barely legible.

Remember, remember, the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.

November 5th (Guy Fawkes night, bonfire night) is a great big deal to English people (I don't know about the Scots or the Irish or the Welsh but I suspect it matters less there). The fireworks start in late October and there are random bangs and explosions until usually just after the Saturday after the 5th.

The largest celebrations are on the Saturday night closest to the 5th, and then on the 5th itself.

Guy Fawkes was a Catholic conspirator who attempted to blow up King James I and the Parliament in session by placing barrels of gunpowder in the cellars under parliament. He was betrayed and caught. He and his folowers were hanged, drawn and quartered. The day they were caught, November 5th, has been celebrated in England ever since with bonfires, a stuffed image of Guy Fawkes that goes on top of the bonfire and fireworks. In the UK, Guy Fawkes night is a big celebration, much bigger than Halloween which passes unnoticed a few days beforehand.
