He didn't wear a hockey's goalie mask in the very first movie in the series; he wore a sack!

Tattered gray coveralls, not overalls, an old style hockey mask and heavy boots. You can get a fairly in-expensive Jason costume at just about anyplace that is selling adult costumes, it comes with a machete but Jason uses whats available to do his deeds. Being creative in killing victims is what makes 80's slasher films what they are.
