Okay I know this is TMI but I am clueless. I have hemmeroids REALLY bad and my doctor only told me over the counter medicine that I could put on. We do not have any money at the moment and the doc said if it is not cleared up at birth, they would need to be surgically removed (yes they are that bad). As I am scheduled for induction Wednesday, I was hoping someone had ideas on how to make them better. Or less painful at least

Preparation H...works very well if you can get 5 or 6 bucks together.

If not - a sitz bath can help..."To ease discomfort from a vaginal yeast infection, women should take a warm saline sitz bath. To prepare, fill the tub to hip height with warm water and add 1/2 c of salt (enough to make the water taste salty) and 1/2 vinegar. Sit in the bath for 20 minutes (or until the water gets cool). The vinegar will help bring the vaginal pH back to 4.5 (pH is a measurement of how acid or alkaline a fluid is).

A brief, cool sitz bath helps ease inflammation, constipation, and vaginal discharge. It can be used to tone the muscles in cases of bladder or bowel incontinence."

You'd want to go for the cool sitz bath...you use the same 'recipe', though, minus the vinegar.

Go back to your GP (if you are in the UK) and ask for them to provide you with a prescription for the cream. You should receive free prescriptions when you are pregnant and for a year after the birth.

GPs will often suggest that you buy an over the counter solution for two reasons

1. It is usually cheaper for you (if you don't get free scripts already)

2. They pay towards the cost from their budget for scripts so this method saves them money too!

You shouldn't need to see the doc again. Just give them a call and ask the receptionist if they can arrange for a prescription to be collected.

If you are claiming Income Support, JSA or getting a higher rate of tax credits you may qualify for a Sure Start Maternity Grant which could help with your baby purchases.

Good luck with the birth!

I've never had a hemmeroid so I don't know how you feel, I'm sorry though. What about your health insurance? Can't your doctor give you a prescription and then you take it to the pharamacy and your health insurance cover it? If you can't do that then in some pregnancy books I've read, they say if you get hemmeroids to take a warm fitz bath, or just a warm bath. It's supposed to ease the pain. I hope you feel better soon, and congrats on your new baby!

Put about 3 inches of warm water in your bathtub and soak your bottom for about 15 minutes - two or three times A DAY.

If you any extra change lying around, you can go to a dollar store (or any store) and get a small bottle of witch hazel. (Should be about $1). You can soak a wash cloth or a pad with the witch hazel and then freeze it. Apply it to your bottom for a couple of minutes every few minutes (be careful not to freezer burn your bum).

Over the next few days, eat lots of fiber and try not to strain when using the bathroom. Don't sit on the toilet very long, as this tends to irritate those little buggers!

Good luck :-)

Ask your dr. for Procto-Foam. It helps tremendously with the pain.
