The lamp post was torn up by the witch queen in London, and when she went to Narnia she stuck it in the ground and because the land was new it took root and grew. It originally showed up in the first book (Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe) out in the snowy woods.

"The Magician's Nephew" recounts the story of the creation of the world of Narnia.

The witch-queen Jadis ripped off the bar of a lamp-post in London and brought it with her into Narnia. As Narnia was young and growing then, when Jadis attacked Aslan with it (I think it then fell to the ground) it grew into a lamp-post.

Here's a summary, and good luck:

The Magician's Nephew, though the sixth in the series, really describes the origin of the land of Narnia and how evil came into what was created a perfect world.

It links to the creation story, because you see Aslan singing/speaking the world into existence. (In Genesis...And God Said...) As the children watch, things start appearing out of the emptiness and space as Aslan sings. He's creating Narnia.

The children unleash the evil (actually it's Digory, not Polly) in Narnia by going to the dying world and ringing the bell which awakens the evil witch. She grabs onto their clothes as they jump into the pool and leave her dying world.

The witch also goes into the earth with the kids. She tries to control our world and a big fight ensues. In the struggle she rips up a lamp post, which then goes with her into Narnia when the kids go into Narnia (they jump into another world after grabbing her in order to get her out of our world). She throws the lamp post when once in Narnia. (I think she was aiming at Aslan Himself, but it's been too long for me to be sure at whom she aimed. I think it was at Him, because she was terrified of Him.) Because the world of Narnia has JUST been created, the lamp post immediately gets rooted in the earth of Narnia and becomes "alive."

What kind of school would have you do a book report on this?
What grade level is this for?

I'm curious because most schools are not too friendly towards Christian ideas these days.
