Is this because most cultures view playing drums as a "masculine" occupation?

i think girls are discouraged from playing drums because 'drums aren't a girl's instrument'.

it's a silly prejudice: two of the greatest drummers ever (evelyn glennie and mo tucker) were both female.

but then prejudices are silly - that is how they work.

I would love to play the drums. I tried it for a day in Seattle and it was awesome. There aren't many female drummers, so girls who want to go into the music field tend to look to the female role models they do have, who are usually singers.

Funny you should ask...
I wanted to learn to play drums when I was in the 8th grade (1974). When I asked the band director if I could sign up for drum lessons (he had put out a call for those who wanted to learn to come to him), he told me that "drums aren't really a girl's instrument."

So, I grew up loving percussion, but never got to learn to play drums...
Years later (recently) my niece would take drum lessons, and, bless her sweet teenaged heart, she bought me a pair of drumsticks for Christmas last year, (knowing my story about 8th grade), and teaches me drums when we both have spare time. :-)

Not sure-maybe just because not all women are interested in that career just like there aren't as many male nurses. If anyone ever has a chance to see Lenny Kravitz in concert, they will want to be a female drummer. She is awesome!!!!

I've always wanted to learn how to play the drums- my parents wouldn't let me play when I was young. They thought the noise would drive them insane. I ended up learning to play the flute, instead. I was quite good at it. But it wasn't where my passion was. By the time my younger sister was old enough to learn to play an instrument, my parents had relaxed their views somewhat, and they allowed her to learn how to play the drums (I was jealous, I admit it...lol!)...and she was really good at it! She ended up playing in a band.

I still would like to learn to play the drums. They're my favorite instruments.

Drumming is similar to engineering. It is very precise and the sound isn't as melodious as a trumpet or flute. Actually, not too many women play flutes or trumpets either. It's another case of "Time to face the facts". For whatever reason exists, men play musical instruments more than women do.

I am a proud drummer and female.

My grandma (in her 70's) wanted to play when she was younger but they told her that's for boys. That's probably why it's not seen that often.

leodude123456: What are you talking about? I played for years and never had either of those happen. The muscle is gained in the wrist and sometimes fingers.

Most likely.

When I was in the high school marching band, I played flute...and 99% of our flute players were female. There were hardly any girls in the drumline if at all.

Interesting note: Drummers in marching band are often obnoxious punks. I know this from firsthand experience...it was true where I went to school.

That is quite sexist. Any woman could play the drums if they wanted. It is just coincidence that more men tend to play the drums.

I think female musicians are so hot! The best female drummers are Sheila E. of Princes band (great!) and Lenny kravitz drummer.
