i need to take the top( the bit you lift up with the screen ) off to be able to remove 2 screws which are each side of the hinges no other way to get to them as have to remove modem and then put back as internet cant detect modem start up disc has asked for this to be done it is a dell inspiron 1300 sorry to sound silly but if you have got any idea then please answer if you are going to be genuine thanks very much

There is no reason for you to do this. Taking laptops apart without any experience is a dangerous undertaking.
Having said that - it sounds like the issue you are facing is connection problems for your Internet access - NOT issues with the hardware of your laptop. You did not state what kind of connection you are attempting to make - DSL, Cable, etc. If you are trying to set up a broadband account (DSL, Cable) - the modem that setup is looking for is the EXTERNAL modem the Internet Service Provider should have sent you along with the setup CD.
I hope this isn't a joke a your part and I have wasted my time answering the question.

Check the dell website.

It is a bit of a pain (jumping between all the different bits of instructions), but they do have all the info.

There can be bits with hidden screws and bit that should just be 'popped' off - you don't want to get it wrong!

in word, place the cursor after the "p", click and then press the backspace key 3 times :)

i would say try taking off the screws at the bottom but be careful not to wreck your laptop
