The engine heated up during a parade and reached 230 degrees before I could exit the parade. I shut it down right away and let it cool naturally overnight. It started right up and seems to run fine. What indicators of damage should I watch for?

Watch for white smoke, indicating a head gasket failure, a very common failure from overheat.

What is a short duration? a few minutes, several minutes?

A minute or two is pretty much harmless for any motor. Several minutes can be a problem. 230° isn't that bad on a health engine, it's probably just fine.

Were you pulling a trailer? It should not have heated up otherwise.

on these new cars the electric fans don't even kick on until the temp reaches 230 to 235 degrees so the short time yours did that I don't think you hurt anything.
