I'm amazed at how many "baseball fans" have asked this question. I agree that A-Rod seems to be selfish as well, but to actually want the best player in the game not to be playing next year? I always find it amazing that fans get so upset with a ballplayer who wants to make as much as possible while he can. I would imagine that none of them has ever wanted to make more money in their life. Yes, 25 million a year seems silly to play a game, but if someone offered me that money, I wouldn't turn it down. Perhaps the blame should instead lie with the owners that throw that money out. They have had the opportunity to keep salaries down, but as long as you have a handful of owners that will pay the money, salaries will continue to escalate. Why shouldn't the players take it? Should a player of Rodriguez's caliber say to an owner," Oh no, I'm not worth 25 miilion a year, just give me a million."?
I think it's incredibly ironic that the Yankees fans are all complaining about him being a "mercenary" when their success has been mainly due to Steinbrenner's history of outspending the other teams. The Yankees knew that Rodriguez had that out clause when he came there, and chose to take the chance that he would want to stay a Yankee. They lost. That's all part of the game.
As much as I dislike Rodriguez, I do have to give him credit. He too is taking quite a risk, walking away from that contract. I think his agent has already had some "unofficial" talks with a few teams, and feels they can do better.
If and when the owners decide to "boycott" a player (can you say collusion, litigation and large fines? - it happened once already) it certainly will not be the greatest player in the game. Any one who feels that he should not be playing baseball next year, in my opinion, is not a true fan. A fan wants to see the best players on the field. When I'm watching a game, I don't really care if the pitcher is making 15 million a year or the league minimum. I don't care if the shortstop has a 5 year deal or is a free agent at the end of the year.
Enjoy the game for the game itself, not for all the other crap that goes with the business of baseball.

It can't happen - that goes back to the days of collusion under Commissioner Ueberroth - but there are a number of real problems A-Rod is going to have to get the proposed new contract.
There will not be an outrageous bidding war - few teams can afford such a deal - and a club's chemistry would literraly have to change overnight to make him THE player, which may pollute the waters with the existing stars who have put in the time and been team players.
And for a guy who cannot deliver in October, why would a World Series contender want to pay mega-dollars to one player for homers in May versus Kansas City...that team is already doing that very well without this clubhouse cancer with an ego in the Barry Bonds stratosphere.

I do believe it's time to say "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH". There is a part of me that doesn't fault players for accepting what owners are willing to pay......but.......ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. A line needs to be drawn. Now. A-Rod may be the greatest thing since sliced bread....but......there is no way someone should be paid $2,333,000 per game. (based on the 350 mil "floor" over 10 years and 150 games a year) That is $259k per inning for crying out loud...........ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!

I don't think that's fair. He may be a money grubbing miser but he hasn't done anyone any harm. It's like one of my friends "Katalex" has said before. When he gets inducted into the hall of fame there will be a dollars sign on his cap instead of a team insignia. Now, that's fair!! lol

No. I don't care what people say about him. He's one of the very best. You like Bonds? A-Rod is a god compared with him. We need more players like A-Rod and Prince Albert and those guys, not more mediocre players. I don't get what's up with you guys. Do you really mean to insinuate that if your boss said, "Mr. Bugsme, I'm giving you a 250% raise" that you'd say , "Oh, no, boss. No thanks. Don't want to be greedy"? Liar.

It would definately be funny, but it's just a matter of who can afford him. Someone will definately pick him up & he'll make more in 1 year than everyone that responds to your question makes together in a year.
