We never give out candy, because we are always out trick or treating with our own kids. By the time we get home, it is usually about 9, and most kids in our area aren't trick or treating anymore. However, in the past we have had kids show up knocking on our door after we have gotten home, even though we have our porch light off. Isn't that the universal symbol that a house isn't giving out candy? It was when I was a kid. If the porch light wasn't on, you didn't go to that house, but it doesn't seem to stop kids. It may sound mean, but that late at night, I don't want to be bothered with trick or treaters, and the only candy we have is what my kids just got. Can we post a sign on our door telling people that we are not giving out candy or is that rude?

NO AVRAHAM, I JUST HAVE ENOUGH CONSIDERATION OF OTHER PEOPLE, THAT I DON'T LET MY KIDS GO UP TO THEIR HOUSE AT 9:00 AT NIGHT. BY THAT TIME OF NIGHT, THE PARENTS SHOULDN'T BE LETTING THEIR KIDS TRICK OR TREAT ANYMORE.

On a more polite note, my husband and I both take my kids trick or treating. We both enjoy doing that with them, and neither one of us wants to miss out on it.

No, It's not rude at all. I have been doing this the last few years and I'm always at home on Halloween night. I don't have kids yet so the thought of getting candy slips my mind every year. My house is the first house on the corner so the kids come ringing my doorbell first if I don't put a sign up.
I don't think it's rude though. Kids don't care. As long as they can go to the next house their fine. Besides, not everyone celebrates Halloween. Don't worry about it and just continue to put your sign up. Your not the only one who does this.

I was going to say turn off your porch lite... but then I seen the rest of it. Growing up, we didn't go to houses unless their lite was on, or their door was open. Just leave your lite out and your door shut. Don't answer if you are afraid it will be rude, or tell them it has already been given out, and you'll have more next year!! I do not give out candy either.. we take our daughter trick- or- treating, too. I am also lucky enough to live in on a main highway, so little goblins are out of the question!!

I don't think it would be rude to post a sign, especially if people don't follow the porch light on rule. I always thought that was a given rule! Anyways, I think its very inconsiderate for people to show up after say 8:00 because its already been dark for quite a while! If you don't want to put out a sign, then I would just ignore the knock on the door. Thats what we do!

I agree with the porch light rule, but kids are kids. It amazes me that parent do not stay with their children and do not set up parameters for the kids to follow. Maybe you should place a sign: NO LIGHTS, NO CANDY, SORRY WE RAN OUT!

I leave a bucket of candy on the porch with a sign that states, sorry, it was full when we left for our kids to attend the carnival at church. The carnival is at the following address:

And, yes I did leave with it full. I have no idea if the first family takes it all or if they each take a few pieces, but I did my part.

Its not rude but don't be surprised if someone does get mad about it. You can't avoid getting someone mad though. If you don't do something, you will make the kids that show up mad. If you do put up the sign, people will think that you are doing it because you are stingy or something.

By the way, do not put up a sign saying that you are not giving out candy because you are not home. You might as well take out an ad in the paper for people to break in and take your stuff.

It is a universal sign but kids are getting dumber and more greedy.. Deadly combination. Whats rude is them knocking on your door, past trick or treating hours when your lights arent even on. I say leave the note, if they cant take the hint of all your lights being off.

Just turn out the lights and put a sign out that says, "Sorry, out of candy. Have a good night!" Even though aren't giving out candy, its a polite way to get people to move on.

That is actually a problem my family has been going through as well these past five years. But we actually put a sign telling children that we are not giving candy out, if in doubt you can always put another alternative stating you are done candies, to be more creative you can also add Happy halloween to the ending.

Leave the lights off. Have a frightening mask ready. When some rude little bugger comes knocking, sneak out the back door & scare the crap out of them! Having a running chain saw (w/o the chain) would be a nice touch. I doubt that they'll be back next year!

You shouldn't do that because it just tells thieves you aren't home and everything inside is free! Just leave the lights out so they will think you're in bed or something, that is what I do. I don't give out candy at all. Can't afford to buy candy for myself, let alone a bunch of kids. And I don't buy candy because of the teeth-rotting obesity causing elements it promotes. In my opinion.
