When I was growing up, near Chicago, right after school people would get their costumes on and start going door-to-door. I thought it was so weird at the time, and haven't really seen it since. Has anyone else seen this?

The only time I saw this was one year when there was some strange issue, and the towns in my area though it would be better for the children's protection. Other then that no.

Here trick or treat is from 6 to 7:30. But I do remember when I was young my home town did it from 4 to 6 in order that the children would not be out after dark.

In Australia we don't celebrate Halloween. But yesterday we had a few kids come to our door during the day (it was so exciting because we've never had kids come to the door on halloween). And they came... TWICE! That was very exciting for me considering they never do. It was so cuteee!!
When i was kid, i would go round to my neighbour's houses during the day and say "trick or treat!" But most of 'em hadn't even heard of Halloween and would just give me money, since they were confused.
Even at times, me and my friends would have to stand there for 10 minutes just trying to explain to the family what the holiday was and the rules of it (dress up, go door to door, get candy!) Yet even though it was such a simple concept, they still didn't get it most of the time. Ah well... money's cool too i spose.

daytime trick or treaters are usually really young children because they're to little to be out after dark, it's fairly common, some people wanna get a head start for the long night ahead, get the best stuff first I guess

Yes, I did today at the local drug store. A Mom came in dressed with 3 smaller children around 2 p.m. (probably) kindergarten or preschool kids...

Yes in fact, many years ago when all this threatening garbage like razor blades and drugs found in candy started, folks would take their kids out the night before! Too bad kids can't just be kids!

I have never heard of anyone getting out that early.
But when its still pretty early and light yes.

Mostly because it is safer for kids to be out when its light than when its dark, less to worry about.
You see it more now adays because there is so much more to worry about.
But thats just here.
Some places may be different than others.

Yes, when I lived in Washington State, kids would start showing up around 3pm.

mostly just the very young kids do this. their parents feel more safe with them trick or treating while it's still daylight.

and since they are younger and have an earlier bedtime, it gives the parents the chance to get them ready for bed without sacrificing any sleep.
