Wow! Check out THIS excerpt that I would never have considered!

Consider the film's opening sequence: the shot of a blue sky with a white feather floating in the right corner. The theme, a soft mellow piece of music played on one piano and a few stringed acoustic instruments, begins. The camera zooms in to the feather and tracks it as it slowly makes its way down to earth. The opening credits begin rolling. The typeface used is an elegant, white serif font. As the feather comes down, the first object seen in the background is the steeple of a church with a cross on top. The feather rises a little with a tuft of wind and hangs suspended in the air for a few seconds next to the cross. It then gently falls down to earth and the audience is able to see the intersection of a street. The feather comes to rest at the feet of Forrest Gump. A close-up reveals that the feather has three light bands of gray. Forrest's sneakers and socks also have three colored bands on them.

The ideological significations of the scene and its "spiritual" quality are obvious to almost anyone in America. The sky can be easily interpreted, among other things, to signify God, heaven, life, freedom, truth, innocence, mother, and purity of thought and intention. The soft, mellow and harp-like music further reinforces the religious motif, and the thin, white serif type used for the credits signifies the reverence the makers of the movie have for the values portrayed in the scene. The feather is white - again signifying purity. It is travelling down from the sky - signifying that it is sent down from the heavens. The slow, random path it takes on its way down signifies the unhurried unfolding of the universe and God's plans. The steeple and cross again reinforce the ideas of God and religion. As the feather is gently wafted down to Forrest's feet, the connection between him and God is certainly hard to miss. The three stripes on the feather and those on Forrest's shoes and socks can also signify the holy trinity - father, son, and holy spirit - which is present in both the feather and Forrest.

It has more than just one meaning. It is a way to show how fragile life is and how easy it is to loose your life and how easy it is to loose those whom you care for.It is a movie trick used to connect the events in his life into a coherent whole and a way to travel from one end to the other end of the story as his life unfolds.
