Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card, is a book everyone should read. There's so much depth to the story- it may not be about life specifically, but..um...it is. Uh, that sentence was a lot lamer then I planned it to be. Just read the book. Trust me, it's worth it.

There is a great author/philosopher/historian named Will Durant that you should check out. His books most associated with life would be:
Interpreting Life
The Lessons of History
The Greatest Minds and Ideas of All Time
He has a bunch more but most of them are either about the history of civilization or the history of philosophy. But he's an absolute terrific and easy to read author.
Others would be:
The Gift
or
The Prophet

The Art of Happiness by the Dalai Lama is such a book. I liked it so much that I bought two dozen copies and sent them to friends and family.
