The word is being used a lot more for the last year or so.
Where-as before, someone who was promiscuous or slutty, now has sex with "random" people.
Someone with mismatched clothes wears "random" clothes.
Someone who blurts out an odd or irrelevant statement, says "random" things.
I'm not saying that the word is misused. Merely used more often. Was it on a TV show or movie that I missed or what?
I do understand that 35 years ago, people were advised to perform "Random Acts of Kindness", so perhaps the word has merely been on a generational heitus, and reincarnated along with many other things from that most silly of decades - the 70s.
Sorry for the randomness of my question.
Any help or insight would be appreciated greatly.

Words and expressions come and go without any apparent reason. The word "random" is one of them. It actually means without order or plan so it's being slightly misused, but that's the beauty and the mystery of language. I guarantee that in a year or so, "random" will go the way of most slang and overused expressions.

I think it's just a fad, same as a particular clothing style, tv show, behaviour, object. It's just a popular word. My mother thinks it is misused, mostly by teenagers, that most things declared "random" aren't actually random. As for where it came from, I have no idea! Where do any of those wacky clothes come from, and why are certain types of shows really popular one decade/year but not the next? Who knows!

Yes it is being used more, and most often incorrectly. Now I find it used mostly when someone says or does something out of character and it's described as random, when it's not random as much as odd.
Anyway, it's just another example of the dumbing down of America, like axing questions, or the phrase baby daddy.

LOL i like the way you worded that question. Yh, i've noticed it too. But it's mostly teenagers that use the word 'random' more. I think because it has so many applications and it's an easy to understand, pretty simple word.

I know what you mean.
I see people on their myspaces using things like "Im So Random!" or whatever, and I personally, now that ts used a lot, don't like the word anymore. Preppy teenagers just ruined another word.

Yeah it has gone up in like use but I guess every phrase/word goes through that phase when it's in fashion everyone will move on at some point and get a new word!

I haven't noticed this trend, but sure will now.
I have noticed that people overuse the words "pop", as in colors that pop. "Amazing" is used way too much.
It's refreshing when I hear someone talk who tends to use their own unique words instead of trendy ones.
