It's called traveling. It actually happened last night with Shane Battier. He went up for a layup, got some contact and threw the ball up, didn't hit the rim and he wasn't fouled. The ball came down and he caught it. Traveling was called.

Well, the ball had better hit something -- rim, another person, something -- in order that it not be traveling.
