I've been feeling really down recently and one of my friends has told me that she self harms. I've never thought about self harming but for a while I just feel so depressed and like I want to die. My other friends don't care - they don't notice much of what's going on in my life. I'm really stuck and I seriously need some help. Any help would be good so thanks in advance.

Talking to us was a good first step.
You should know that it's perfectly normal for a
teen to have times when he/she feels really down.
The way to deal with it is to do something to break
the mood. Just sitting there and stewing about it
only makes it worse. Have some fun.
Do something that is easy and needs doing.
You'll feel better. Do something else, maybe a bit
harder.
Self-harm is an extreme symptom, and your friend
needs your help. That might be the something to do
that breaks your blue mood.

It sounds like you have clinical depression. This is not just a "lousy feeling" but is actually a physical neurological brain illness that's a symptom of a chemical imbalance (the imbalance itself may have been caused by something emotional, but now your brain does not work exactly the same as someone without depression). This is similar to how stress works: you experience something which causes you to release emergency chemicals (like adrenaline) for so long that your body starts physically changing because of it, causing you to become sick.

Unfortunately, you can't just "get over it", because you're not deciding to make yourself feel this way. Overcoming clinical depression takes a lot of work and time since you need to fix your brain chemicals. Therapy is the best bet initially, and some people even take medicine for it. You could also try changing your diet (eg eat at least 3 bananas a day since some studies suggest they minimise depression) or adopting healthier sleeping habits.

People need to realise that a normal person simply does not think about killing themselves or just wanting to die. If someone does that seriously and constantly then it's a really bad sign and the person needs serious help, not just being told to "cheer up."

PLEASE do not self-harm. I know it's extremely difficult but try to find more supportive friends, even if it is online.

I wish you the best of luck. You're young, so just think of the wonderful life you'll be able to live once you've managed to control or even cure this, and don't do anything to make yourself feel worse and ashamed (like hurting yourself on purpose).

:)
