Sugar in the gas tank? No. It is insoluble in gasoline, and would be filtered out by the fuel filter. The worst that will happen is it might clog the fuel filter, and even that's not particularly likely.
However, you really don't want to have particulates (like sugar) floating around in your gas tank, and it would hasten you having to have the thing cleaned. It would be no different than any other sediment that can build up in your gas tank, and those can end up blocking the fuel system, too.
But it won't damage the engine.
edit: If you really want to **** with someone, put diesel fuel in their gas tank. That IS soluble with gasoline, so it WILL cause the car to stop running, and will IMMEDIATELY require the entire fuel system, from tank to injectors, to be cleaned at a cost of hundreds of dollars. (It won't keep running long enough to permanently damage the engine internals)
edit2: If they drive a diesel, putting gasoline in won't work as well...diesels aren't quite as picky about what fuels they run.

HOW MUCH damage depends upon how MUCH sugar gets into th engine. I would pull the fuel tank, flush all the fuel lines several times with a chemical cleaner, Remove and replace the injectors, change the engine oil and filter 2 or 3 times within 50 miles IF the vehicle is driveable, Replace the FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR and any other components that gas flows thru.
Depending upon the TYPE of noise that your engine is making tells you what possible damage has occured

Not if you port it on top of the engine, but if it gets in there through the fuel lines it will cause damage to everything it passes through on the way to the engine as well as the engine itself. The sugar quickly thickens in gasoline until it hardens completely bloking passageways and sticking in lines and hoses.

Nope. It will merely gum up the fuel filter. Don't even think about it...it is a misdemeanor to sabotage a vehicle, punishable by fine and/or imprisonment. Good luck!

Yes, it will. It is a horrible prank to pull on someone. It can cost them a ton of money to fix. Hopefully you are just asking because you have a curious mind.
Some people don't have the money to shell out to fix the damage and it can cause them stress beyond belief.

Yes, sugar absorbs moisture and hardens. This will cause the engine to seize.
