I don't think any manager is going to have a huge impact one way or another on a team.
Torre proved that he can win with a good team, just as he proved that he can lose with a bad team before getting the Yankees job. Unless you're a manager who creates a truly groundbreaking style of play or philosophy like John McGraw, it's doubtful that you're going to decide many games.
The first post that mentions Weaver is good - that just about sums up how I view managers. People tend to overrate their value, and it comes down to the players. All the chemistry in the world wouldn't beat a team made of nine Alex Rodriguezes, and the Dodgers need talent on the field more than in the bullpen.

Hmmm manager have a huge impact on a team. Look at the angels in 02. or the card in 06, and he white sox in 05. All three of those teams were made of lesser known players and won the world series. And even this last year with the rockies and the indians. And in contrast Grady Littles decision to leave pedro martinez in to pitch to boone. You can have all the talent n the world like yankees have had for the last 7 years and not get anywhere.
Now as far as the dodgers go, Torre is a great fit he is good with working the young guys in with the veteran players. Something they had problems with in the 07 season. He also will be given the team to manage the way he wants. Something he was unable to do in new york with mr stienbrener looking over his shoulder and second guessing him on everything.
"How good of a manager really is he?"
He did win the world series four times in a row. And through all the crap That was slung at him in new york managed his team into the play offs for each of the 12 years he was there. Sounds pretty damn good to me.

We'll find out.
Earl Weaver once said that managers are overrated and that he'd rather have "9 guys named Robinson" on his team.*
*For you youngsters out there he had hall of famers Brooks Robinson and Frank Robinson on his Orioles team at the time.
