anime is just a term for cartoon shows, comics and movies from Japan.

Japanese style animation. There's a distinct look to the eyes (larger, big pupils with lots of highlights usually) and the angles of the face. Anime shifted how our cartoons look, even Disney used their style in The Little Mermaid and the movie Beauty And The Beast. It's a very distinct art form.
