Don't try moving the Operating System. If you transfer the files then they will be only on the external system. If you copy them then you will have 2 copies of the same items.A good programme I have used for about 5 years is called free commander and it is free ware do a Google search. It will allow you to read your current hard drive and the external at the same time,a problem with the programme is some times stuff deep in it shows German.

The external hard drive will simply show up as the next drive letter, like E: or F:
That's it! You can then use it like you want, like for backups.
If your laptop drive is running out of room, you can move your music files to the external drive.
Personally, I upgraded my laptop drive to be big enough to hold everything (it cost about $100), then I use the external drive for backup copies just in case one or the other crashes!

You only have to transfer files that you want to move. However, you can set it up so that your default hard drive is the external one, so that all new downloads or programs will be stored there. Just make sure that you don't move your operating system or you won't be able to boot up your laptop.

No you will not need to tranfer the files from the current hardrive. You will need to tranfer the files if you want the files on the external hardrive instead of the other one.

Only if you want and only what you want to transfer.
Not the c:\windos, for instance, this folder cannot be moved, even if you would like to. :)
