and went back to public hangings?

Essentially what you are stating as question, is do we believe there would be less crime if capital punishment were enacted for the public to easily view. Hm. Interesting.

I am a proponent of capital punishment because I believe in a system of justice for society - not because I believe it will solve the problem, or elicit a warning to others in general.

I often wondered if it generally worked for puritanical society, by placing men and women in the stocks in public? I really don't know the answer to that, but I would suspect it is somewhere in the middle - that is, for some it had an affect on them, for others, it did not.

With so many deviancies deriving from mental illness, anger and abuse issues as a foundation, I don't know that the answer is capital punishment, by hanging or otherwise. What I DO know, is that justice needs to be tempered and measured and carried out in order for society in general, to be a civilized one (to any degree).

Sincerely,

Grace

There is no fear of a true and certain punishment for any crime in this country any more. The criminal MAY go to jail but MAY also serve no time at all. A few years ago a man aged 18 was imprisoned for consensual sex with his girl friend who was 17 and a half years old at the time. He was released after 3 years because the laws were amended in that state. In the same state about the same time another man was convicted of MURDER and got a SUSPENDED sentence of PROBATION for 10 years.ONLY the FEAR of a CERTAIN punishment can help to prevent crime. Most people in this country can not BUY "justice",,,unless they inherited the cash to pay for it with.

Yes, in many countries where theft, larceny and crimes of that nature are low.....they cut off your arm or hand (fingers for first time offenders) as a punishment.

In Singapore (what was once considered one of the least crime affected nations) they used public cane-ing (not sure how to spell that) as a deterrent.....and that also worked very well.

Public humliliation in addition to public punishment go a long way towards lowering crime. Only those who see it as too severe or too mean have issues with it. I wonder how they would feel if they were the victim and their assailant was the one being tried....

nah... that's not enough.... and there's too many junk laws also that people find and then make excuses and impose them....

think the law enforcers want this.. nah... they don't want more work than they desire... but if they don't jump when someone screams about the law....

then they're in trouble also.. it ties up the courts... more nonviolent offenders go to jail and those who need to be put behind bars and put to "sleep" get out because of all these issues and technicalities...

i think turning the planet into a big glass parking lot will do better.

:D

or hurry up the ice age.. that'll clean out the debris!

yep. death to pedophiles and rapists.

your question reminds me of simple man by charlie daniels

I ain't nothin' but a simple man
They call me a redneck I reckon that I am
But there's things going on
That make me mad down to the core.

I have to work like a dog to make ends meet
There's crooked politicians and crime in the street
And I'm madder'n hell and I ain't gonna take it no more.

We tell our kids to just say no
Then some panty waist judge lets a drug dealer go
Slaps him on the wrist and then he turns him back out on the town.

Now if I had my way with people sellin' dope
I'd take a big tall tree and a short piece of rope
I'd hang 'em up high and let 'em swing 'til the sun goes down

Well, you know what's wrong with the world today
People done gone and put their Bible's away
They're living by the law of the jungle not the law of the land
The good book says it so I know it's the truth
An eye for and eye and a tooth for a tooth
You better watch where you go and remember where you been
That's the way I see it I'm a Simple Man.

Now I'm the kinda man that'd not harm a mouse
But if I catch somebody breakin in my house
I've got twelve guage shotgun waiting on the other side

So don't go pushing me against my will
I don't want to have to fight you but I dern sure will
So if you don't want trouble then you'd better just pass me on by

As far as I'm concerned there ain't no excuse
For the raping and the killing and the child abuse
And I've got a way to put an end to all that mess

Just take them rascals out in the swamp
Put 'em on their knees and tie 'em to a stump
Let the rattlers and the bugs and the alligators do the rest

You know what's wrong with the world today
People done gone and put their Bible's away
They're living by the law of the jungle not the law of the land
The Good Book says it so I know it's the truth
An eye for and eye and a tooth for a tooth
You better watch where you go and remember where you been
That's the way I see it I'm a Simple Man

I disagree. People are oppressed enough as it is, much less having to look forward to getting their necks stretched in public. But, some people like that Stalin sort of government that doesn't allow them to think for themselves, even if it's because they lack the capacity. Err, good question!

Then the law would be committing a crime wouldn't it? Look at the crime rates of places that have the Death Penalty and those that don't. Violence never works.

I think there would be alot less crime if the entire country were like Texas - where everybody is allowed to carry a gun.

LOL......you'd have to research how public hangings helped back then....if it really helped with crime then they'd probably still have them...I think crime would be solve if people got a little more love in their hearts....especially putting religion back into school
