to me a friend is someone who is always there when you need to tlk to someone. They never turndown a chance to hang with you unless they absolutly cant and then they call u later and apologize. a friend never tells ur deepest darkest secret no matter how bad they want to. a friend would never judge you and accept you for who u are and u do the same towards them. a true friend makes sure to put 110% in you friendship to keep it growing and you put in just as much effort as them so you have 220% going into ur friendship.
Internet "friends" are just aqaintences. if u dont tlk to that person you dont kno who they r telling your secrets to, and how much you can really trust that person.
the word friend is used extremely to much! people refer to somebody being their friend even if they r not because they want to gain a popularity point in being friends with somebody more popular than themself to make them look better.an aqaintence is someone u tlk to acationally but u do not really condier ur friend..like u tlk to them but would never tell ur secrets to or invite over to your house for a sleep over type realtionship like a true friend.

I have a very different outlook on the meaning of a friend....I have no family so I choose my friends very carefully...Acquaintances come by the hundreds...they are the ones who will rip u off, stab you in the back...learned that the hard way..my real friends you can count on one hand...don't see them every day, but if anything happens, they're here in a heartbeat....if I'm sad or lonely, they lift my spirits n put a smile on my face..Friends are people you can feel a connection with..As to the people on Y/A, most are acquaintances, you can laugh with them, pick on each other, but you never really know....they see a side of you that is outgoing & share opinions with you...we are are all someone.. Can you make friends on Y/A, I think you can...you just need to be extremely careful...What people say or how they react to a situation tells you a lot...if you talk to them on the phone you get more input as to what they are like. Just like you do when you invite certain people to join your site, trust your gut instinct, if you're wrong, tell them you no longer wish to talk with them. I have friends that live in other states or ones that I used to work with...doesn't take long to see who remains your friend. I talk to them on a regular basis...those are my friends!! You never know about someone you talk to on line which is sad because there are some bad ones who make the rest of us leery...I don't trust very many people....there are reasons but no need to go into that now. Best of luck to you Cat......Pat

Friends can be temporary or forever...My idea of a friend is someone I can talk to and feel she or he has some empathy with me. You can love a friend or just know them as an acquaintance--here in cyberspace, this is fun talking or corresponding, but I don't think we'll ever bond like friends or relatives..God gives us a short time on earth,we have the choice to make the most out of who we choose to bond with...hope you have lots of good friends,CAT.

a friend is someone who is always there for you. you can tell them your secrets and not be afraid that they will judge you. an acquaintance is when you meet someone, but you don't know their life story. usually you have an idea of what that person is like, and have an impression of them. (ex. weird, preppy, cool, funny, etc.) i wouldn't exactly call meeting people on the Internet an "acquaintance" because you usually don't get their real name, or know much about them at all. i think what you see is also an important part of a quote on quote acquaintance, because you can look like anything you want to on the Internet, so you never know.

That's a great question,Cat. A friend is someone who is there for us when we need help and on here, I would say we are contacts. There are different levels of friends as well.I have lots of friends, but some are closer than others.I still call people friends, even if I don't see them often.Co workers,I don't think of as friends. You are right, there are times we call acquaintances friends when they really aren't. I have another comment for my Yahoo Answers buddies. There are some wonderful people on here that I wouldn't mind knowing better.

-A Friend is a person you would call if you needed a ride at 2am.
-A Friend is the person who knows more about you than anyone else and still likes you.
-A Friend is a person you can tell all your secrets, your hopes, your dreams and when she laughs she is laughing with you not at you.
-A Friend is someone who when you aren't with them, you are thinking about them. Not the married type of thinking, the "oh, I should have told her....." or "she would have loved to see this" type of thinking.
-A Friend is someone who is a close as a sister, tells you the truth even when it hurts, and listens when you are telling her the truth.
-A Friend would be on your "emergency call" list, your kids people you can call if I'm not home list, and that special trusted list of people who knows where all your personal papers and secret hiding places are.
I wish I had one.

If you mean cyberspace like here on Yahoo answers... I look at everyone as "someone." Not a friend until I were to personally talk to them outside of here.. More freq on email, or AIM.. or whenever I would have time for something. Everyone is a someone to me.

I have thought about this a lot, I would like to think a true friend is someone who will watch your back for you, be honest in a tactful way when necessary. Someone who will put you at least equal in importance to their needs, it is tough to find this, I try my best to give this to my friends, I don't usually get. I consider others "friends" I guess they are more like pals, buddies associates, and on "cyber-space" I would say virtual friends or something corny like that.

I have a friend. We laugh at the world together. I don't feel alone knowing I have someone to share things with. Deep dark secrets? probably not, but we try to behave so we don't have any.
