Measured in total mass, not headcount, world wide, are there more live fish (vertebrates only), live chickens, or live pigs, today? Whether you have statistics and/or a deductive reasoning process, please explain how you arrive at your answer.

Hands down fish.

Do not get me wrong, there are a great deal of chickens and swine in the world, but it does not even come close to the mass of fish that trive on this planet.

Look at it this way, chicken and pig are stuck living in a very small portion of the world. For example they cannot live in the artic. However with fish they have TONS more land. Fish live in any depth as well as oceans, lakes, rivers, ponds the list goes on and on.

People also tend to forget about the wide range of species. Heck there are over 350 different species of sharks alone.

Nonetheless, fish win, plain and simple and in all honesty it is not even close.

Fish by far. Just look at how many tons of fish are caught each year. And those aren't all the fish in the sea. And you have many farmed fishes. And you have some of the largest ocean going fishes in the whale shark and the basking shark. (if you meant to only include bony fishes, then you would leave these guys out).

There are a lot of domestic pigs and chickens, though. But I don't think it comes even close.

I tried to look this answer up, here's what I got:
939 million pigs in 2002.
24 billion chickens in 2003.
Trillions and trillions of fish with 25,000 known species and 100's more discovered every year!

i would say fish because even if you exclude whales and sharks, some fish can weigh more than pigs and many weigh more than chickens. also there are tens of trillions of fish.

I think fish because the oceans are really big and who knows how many fish are in there? There are also more fish in lakes and ponds. But since people kill and eat fish often, I don't know anymore.
