It sounds like your oil pump has gone bad. A bad oil pump can allow to much oil to flow into the engine causing a buildup within the engine. This means that the oil level will get lower and lower which causes the oil light to come on in the car.

I'd take the car to your local dealership and have them replace the oil pump. Dealerships have parts that work best with your vehicle and if you take it to a dealership you don't risk the chance of someone else working on it and possible messing something else up. Dealerships know what they are doing on your car because they were specially trained to work on your car. Dealerships also usually have the most up to date technology which means they can usually detect problems faster and can very accurately tell you what the problem is and how to fix it.

Hope this helps!!

You can also have the oil pressure sensor and it"s wiring checked, maybe it has a defect and sometimes it gives false alarms. If you actually have an oil pressure problem and the engine is not lubricated properly (no matter if there's not enough oil or the pump fails), the engine will seize up in a couple of minutes after the first alarm. When you managed to roll on and had no problems, the sensor may be malfunctioning and doesn't give a plausible signal. This can be decided with oil pressure measurement. If there's a proper oil pressure and the light is on, it's the pressure sensor for sure (probably this would be the best case, since the pressure sensor is cheaper than an oil pump).

Check the oil level on the dipstick. If you're not sure how to read it ask for help as fresh motor oil is difficult to see on a dip stick. If the level is down check for oil leaks. If the oil level is OK have a mechanic replace the electrical oil light sending unit. At the same time request the mechanic to temporarily hook up a mechanical oil pressure gage to make absolutely sure you have adequate oil pressure. If not you'll need to replace the oil pump and pray (a lot) that no serious damage was done to the bearings inside the motor when you discovered the oil level was low.

Did your mechanic check the oil pressure? The oil light doesn't just mean you are lacking oil, it also can mean your oil pressure is low. This could mean your oil pump is going out.

When you check your oil, make sure your car is off and you let it sit for a few minutes before checking the oil level. Allways wipe off the dipstick once before reading the level.

Sounds like your oil pump is acting up. Probably not pumping the correct amount of oil through your motor. Have it inspected. it is a big job.
